The Perhentian Islands are a little piece of paradise on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. You have to put your life in the hands of a kamikaze fast boat driver to get there from the mainland, but it’s worth it. The Perhentians are made up of two islands: Big Island (Perhentian Besar) and Small Island (Perhentian Kecil), both of which are made up of hilly jungle surrounded almost entirely by little beaches.
There are actually two islands: Perhentian Besar (Big Island) and Perhentian Kecil (Little Island). The big island tends to have bigger (and more classy / expensive) resorts on it, whilst the small island has more basic accommodation on offer. With our backpacker budget we were heading for Long Beach on Kecil. Long Beach is a strip of sandy beach with several cafes along the beach front and a selection of cheap accommodation on offer.
